Counseling Services at Hearts and Horses TRC

In October 2006, Hearts and Horses has engaged in a collaborative effort with April Roglitz, LCSW owner of Painted Horses, LLC, to provide Outpatient Mental Health Services at Hearts and Horses.  The primary therapeutic intervention utilized is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP).

Painted Horses, LLC – Self-Exploration Through Horses

It is our belief that when individuals interact with horses and the natural environment; they come to know themselves better. This process is further accelerated when an individual or group works with a horse, equine specialist, and a counselor who can aid in the facilitation of individual growth/insight and positive change.  Utilizing exposure to horses in the presence of an equine specialist and counselor provides individuals with immediate therapeutic process and intervention.  Painted Horses Equine Assisted Psychotherapy services are designed with the goal to provide Equine Assisted Psychotherapy in a safe and healthy environment to a diverse population of individuals with mental, physical, and or emotional challenges.

Established in 2006, Painted Horses is a limited liability company organized with the purpose to provide outpatient mental health counseling services specializing in utilizing Equine Assisted Psychotherapy as the primary therapeutic intervention.   All Equine Specialists and Therapists are required to have obtained the minimum requirement of Level I Certification in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy through EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) a national organization providing ethical standards and criteria for EAP.  Therapist/Counselors are independently licensed with the State of Maine.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)

Horses have much to teach all of us. Individuals working with horses may learn a little about horses, but mostly learn a lot about themselves. A horse’s ability to connect with people is in a sense mysterious. It’s size and presence somehow forces humans to become physically, emotionally, and spiritually more aware. Essentially, being within the presence of horses, heightens our senses, which ultimately improves our own self-awareness and insight.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a mental health therapeutic intervention in which horses are used as a tool for emotional growth and learning. It is a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist, a horse professional and a horse. Because of its intensity and effectiveness, it is considered a short-term, or "brief" therapeutic approach.  EAP therapeutic interventions are experiential in nature. This means that participants learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horses, and then processing (or discussing) feelings, behaviors, and patterns.  Yet in comparison to other experiential interventions EAP has the added advantage of utilizing horses, dynamic and powerful living beings. The focus of EAP is not riding or horsemanship. In fact, 100% of EAP takes place purely on the ground. The therapeutic interventions involve setting up activities which utilize horses in efforts to require the client or group to apply certain skills; such as non-verbal communication, assertiveness, creative thinking, problem solving, leadership, teamwork, taking responsibility, relationship skills.  EAP addresses a variety of mental health and human development needs including but not limited to behavioral issues, attention deficit disorder, substance abuse, abuse issues, depression, anxiety, relationship problems and social/communication difficulties.  EAP is a powerful and effective therapeutic approach that has an incredible impact on individuals, youth, families, and groups.
